How To Avoid Falling Asleep At The Wheel After Too Much Turkey

After a turkey-filled Thanksgiving meal, it’s often difficult to not fall asleep. Driving a car from a friend’s or relative’s house while feeling drowsy can lead to a collision. Santa Ana Body Shop believes safety is a top priority, so we’ve listed out some tips to stay awake at the wheel after too much turkey:

  1. Chew Gum

Not only will gum freshen your breath after your Thanksgiving meal, it will also help keep you awake. The chewing action and flavor will wake you up and get your brain focused on something else besides your tired feeling.

  1. Open a Window

Keep your car’s window open for about ten minutes. The noise from the road and increased amount of air flow will wake you right up. Keep in mind that just doing this for a few second will often only wake you up for a small period of time before the drowsy feeling sets back in. Aim to keep your window open for about ten minutes, which is enough to wake you up completely.

  1. Turn on a Fast-Paced Song

Music affects your mood, which can affect your fatigue level. Turn on a song with a fast beat that can wake you up. For an additional kick, turn up the volume a bit as well and sing along. When your mind is thinking about the song, it’s much more difficult to fall asleep at the wheel.

  1. Enlist the Help of Technology

There’s an app for everything, including staying awake at the wheel. These apps can help you stay awake by making noises at random intervals, using facial recognition to make sure your eyes are open, and even having a conversation with you. Browse through the app store and download an app that will help you stay awake on the road.

  1. Pull Over

If you absolutely can’t keep yourself awake, pull over at a gas station and walk around for a few minutes. Walking will get the blood pumping in your body and gives your mind a rest from focusing on driving. Once you feel more alert, you will be able to complete your drive without worrying about falling asleep at the wheel.
